I was listening to Evanescence “My Immortal” and as the song died out, I thought I heard something strange. So I listened again... Sure enough, it sounded like tones, perhaps morse code, inside the end of the song. I loaded the song into Audacity, and determined that the tones didn’t exist all throughout the song (excluding a rendering artifact).

I spent about half an hour using FFT to isolate the sound form to the 2500 to 3000 Hz range and amplify it separate from the “music”.

The tones were distinct enough to be visualized on the spectrograph, but didn’t appear regular enough to be morse code. I thought about it for a few more minutes, and then decided to google for it.

Moody explains, “It’s actually a preset pattern on a keyboard synthesizer that we were using on that song. And if you sustain the note long enough, it trails off into this beeping that sounds a lot like Morse cool and we thought that it sounded really cool, so we left it. So it’s there by accident, to be perfectly honest with you.”

A few more googles suggests that it may still in fact be morse code...

Another ten minutes of analysis (I’ve got it pinned down to 2638 Hz and all the “song” removed, I’m down to just the tone.
