The Observing Song

There‘s storms and there are rings
moons and many amazing things.
I‘d like to see them with Hubble,
or at least adaptive optics.

But we‘re stuck on a tiny scope
all we can do is hope
that the winds aloft are low
and the sky‘s clear.

Beta Gem is a star
I can see it from afar;
oh wait, that‘s just a speck
on the lens.

We‘re looking for Jupiter or Saturn
but all we see is a test pattern.
Where is the TO?
He must be on a lunch break.

The instrument is down
might as well go out on the town.
We could switch it
but that‘d take half an hour.

Beta Gem is a star
I can see it from afar;
oh wait, that‘s just a speck
on the lens.

Glenn‘s on the scope.
Paul‘s at the end of his rope
he just overwrote all his files.
Oh Shit!

We write logs, we save files,
and off it all goes into piles.
Maybe someday in the future
someone will see it.

Beta Gem is a star
I can see it from afar;
oh wait, that‘s just a speck
on the lens.

Well the window is closing
and the planets, they ain‘t posing.
We‘d like to see some features
but it‘s all a blur.

Now our hours are through,
sorry if I‘m crabby toward you.
We barely got even one
decent image.

Beta Gem is a star
I can see it from afar;
oh wait, that‘s just a speck
on the lens.

Oh yes, Beta Gem is a star
it‘s out there very far.
On some clear night you‘ll see it
and remember.
